New Snow!

Well, there is no question now, it is winter.  Snow is falling, it has laid down an inch in the last hour and it is still coming down.  Just perfect for a white Christmas here at the lodge.
The wildlife report for the day: 13 turkeys were spotted crossing the road just west of Twin Lakes yesterday as we were headed up to the lodge.  I always love seeing them because in our part of the country they are quite reclusive.  I think I've only see turkeys around the lodge 3 times in all the years we have been here.

The Twin Lakes, seen from Hwy 82 with clouds settled over our valley.
We still have some openings for the Holidays, check our website and make plans now to come up and enjoy the mountains this Christmas or New Years.

Hydro Electric News

We have been working on installing a hydro electric generator here at the lodge for quite awhile.  The dream has been there since we purchased the property back in 1993 but this year we finally got all the pieces moved into the proper places and in May we started installation.  In the process we had to send parts back for repair which took forever but today we successfully generated some power.  Once the power company comes up and inspects next week we will be officially underway.  Wheeee!

Update on our little corner of the world.

Scott says we have about 5" of new snow at the lodge so it is looking like winter but even more interesting is the Colorado Department of Transportation's announcement that Independence Pass is closed for the season.  That means it is time for us to print out a bunch of our Aspen maps showing how to get from Twin Lakes to Aspen in the winter.  We must give out at least 200 of them over the course of each winter.
This also means it is time to start getting the winter gear ready and time to plan your winter excursions to the mountains.
  See you soon.

Hummingbird fun.

Summer is here; one of our guests had fun taking these pictures.

Attached are the pics you saw me taking on the Cinnamon Bear porch a couple weeks ago. The hummingbirds were really amazing. I was impressed that it took them less than a minute to start drinking from the hand held feeder only inches from my face and the camera. I could feel the breeze from their fluttering wings and I couldn't stop blinking as they hovered in front of my face. This was our third stay at your place and once again we had a fabulous visit. Thanks a lot, CG

Word on the street, the pass will open today at 2pm.

Yep, that is the word on the street and this morning great big pieces of equipment were rolling down the highway past the lodge.  This means that summer is officially here and we welcome it.  There's still plenty of snow on the peaks so the drive up here is just beautiful.  Our aspen trees, while thinking about it, haven't leafed out yet; that should happen the next couple of days.

Ice Out

Well today it is official, spring is here in the mountains and warm weather and flowers are surely not far away now.  How can I make that bold rash statement when the weather service says our low tonight will be in the teens? The only true way .... The ice is off the Twin Lakes so it is officially spring.  The ice has been off the upper lake for maybe a week but the lower lake always holds onto its ice a bit longer, never convinced that spring is in the air as early but now Spring is really here.  Come up and try some Ice Out fishing in the high country.

Hydro progress.

We're so excited, the 6kw turbine and inverter are on order and our hydro electric system is one step closer.  We hope the contractor will be ready to start in early May!  8" of new snow yesterday and today is sunny, cold and bright.  Here are some Twin Lakes views from last week.

It was just beautiful the way the sky was all blue but there was this bank of clouds tucked up in front of Mt. Elbert, not quite ready to be on its way for the day.

Winter Winter Winter.

While we are excited to have lots of great snow to play with, this has been a tough week for the maintenance department (translate: Scott)  We lost water to Beaver Lodge and then yesterday the Barn went as well.  The plumber is up trying to get us going again but so far his tricks are not working.  In 16 years this is the first time our main pipe to the lower side has frozen.  But as I said, the snow is wonderful and this is winter moonlight weekend as the full moon approaches.  We hope you all experience a few winter moonbeams.
More when it's warmer!
